Why study Core Maths?

Core Mathematics has been designed to maintain and develop real-life Mathematics skills, for students who would like to continue with Mathematics, but without taking it all the way to A Level. What you study can be applied on a day-to-day basis in work, study or life and most courses will include a financial Mathematics element. It will also help with other A-level subjects – in particular with science, geography, business studies, psychology and economics. The skills developed in the study of mathematics are increasingly important in the workplace and in higher education; studying Core Mathematics will help you keep up these essential skills. Most students who study Mathematics after GCSE improve their career choices and increase their earning potential.

What can it lead to?

Core Mathematics is a new course but already several universities have come out in strong support of it. Even subjects like history now recognise the importance of statistics and so a Core Mathematics qualification will help you hit the ground running at university.

Employers from all different sectors are also firmly behind the Core Mathematics qualification. Many roles in today’s workplace require high levels of budget management and problem-solving skills; Core Mathematics will be a useful tool in equipping you with these skills.

How is the course assessed?

You will have 2 lessons per week in the first year and 2 lessons per week in the second year.

At the end of the 2 years, you will sit 2 exam paper which will be externally assessed, and will each count 50% towards your final grade.

Throughout the course, there will be constant feedback from your teacher on your progress.

There will also be a revision period leading up to these exams.

What do I need to qualify for this course?

  • 5 GCSEs including GCSE Mathematics at grades 9-4 (A*-C) and have a strong desire to advance your Mathematics education but without taking A Level Mathematics.
  • You will also need a scientific calculator for this course.

Who are the teachers?

Our Maths team here at St Charles consists of Head of Maths, Sam Amin, 2nd in department Balpreet Malhotra and Maths teachers Jessy John, and Lubna Hakim. Each of our teachers have Maths degrees and many years of teaching experience.

Our Maths staff are always willing to offer support outside of class on top of our programme of support workshops, and Mr Amin will be leading the weekly Maths Society meetings in 15/16 – details of which can be found below.

Here in the Mathematics Department we have some distinctive features that we are very proud of:

The Mathematics Society - Students with a passion for Mathematics are given the opportunity here to explore mathematics outside of the curriculum. They will attend lectures and seminars as well as receive support in applying to the UKs most prestigious universities for Mathematics related degrees.

Extensive support programme – Several weekly workshops led by staff. We also select some of our most successful A Level students to be paid to run workshops and mentor other students.

Multimedia feedback – as well as receiving regular written and 1-1 feedback on your work, in the Mathematics department we also use our iPads to assess students work. This means that you will receive individualised video feedback that will be stored online and available for you to access throughout the year
