Mathematics (Further AS)
Level: AS
Awarding Body: OXFORD & CAMBRIDGE SCHOOLS EXAMINING BOARD MEI STRUCTURED MATHEMATICS SCHEME

Entry Requirements:
GCSE A*or A

Course Content:
This course is essential for those who are interested in studying Mathematics, Physics or Engineering at university. It covers the vital mathematical topics that are needed, in addition to the Mathematics A2 topics, to start a university course in these subjects. The best universities will make this course an entry requirement for the university courses mentioned above and without it you may find yourself at a great disadvantage when making an application.

The AS course studied will contain one module of Further Pure Mathematics FP1 and two modules of Applied Mathematics in Mechanics.

In Further Pure Mathematics, you will be studying topics additional to the standard AS Mathematics Pure content such as:

- Complex Numbers

- Curve Sketching

- Algebra

- Matrices

In Mechanics you will be studying topics such as:

- Vectors

- Equations of constant acceleration

- Newton’s Laws of motion

- Projectiles

- Centres of mass

- Work, Energy, and Power

- Momentum and collisions

Teaching Learning Methods:
Students will encounter a variety of approaches, including:

Teacher presentation of key materials/examples

Taking notes

Problem solving

Using the interactive whiteboard

Software packages (Autograph, Cabri Geometer)

Learning to program and using the graphical calculator

Discussions

Group work

Going over homework

Preparing for end of topic tests by answering review sheets

Topic tests

Revision

Workshops - During the week you will be attending the weekly workshops as part of your Mathematics AS. You will also be able to use these to get help with areas of Further Mathematics that you have difficulty with or to explore areas of mathematical interest.

Assessment:
All three modules have a written exam that will last for one hour and thirty minutes. Your overall grade will be an average of the module marks

Skills & Commitment:
Further Mathematics at AS level is slightly more demanding than the standard AS in Mathematics. It aims to give students a wider based mathematical education. If you are really interested in Mathematics and would like to spend a substantial amount of your college day studying it, this course may be just right for you.

Cost:
Students are provided with all appropriate text books, additional materials and practice exam papers. We will expect students to buy their own graphical calculator. These are available through the college at cost price.

Progression:
Further Mathematics AS is now a compulsory or a preferred entry requirement to degree courses and professions in the fields of physics, engineering and mathematics.

College Contact:
For further information contact Mr S Amin or Ms J Farkas.
