Health & Social Care BTEC Extended Certificate Course Outline

Advanced Level 2
Awarding Body: Pearson

Study Health & Social Care

The Pearson BTEC Level 2 First Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care provides a broad, engaging foundation in the principles and everyday practice of the health and social care sectors. Designed for learners who want to understand how care services support individuals across all stages of life, this course explores human development, care values, communication techniques, and the promotion of healthy living.

Lessons blend theoretical knowledge with vocational, real-world applications. You will explore case studies, participate in simulated practical scenarios, and investigate how professional care values safeguard individuals, empower service users, and ensure high standards of care. This course provides the core knowledge and study skills required to progress onto advanced Level 3 programmes, apprenticeships, or junior job roles in the sector.

Entry Requirements

The General entry requirements are 4 GCSE’s at Grade 3 or above with a minimum 3 in GCSE English Language or Maths or a MERIT in Foundation Learning.

Content

The course is built around four mandatory core units (totalling 120 GLH) that form the essential knowledge and practical skills base, alongside selected optional specialist units (totalling 240 GLH):

  • Unit 1: Human Lifespan Development (Mandatory Core):

Explores physical, intellectual, emotional, and social growth across the six life stages—from infancy through to later adulthood. You will investigate how genetic, lifestyle, environmental, and socioeconomic factors influence growth, as well as how expected and unexpected life events are managed.

  • Unit 2: Health and Social Care Values (Mandatory Core):

Investigates the core values that underpin good practice, including dignity, respect, confidentiality, safeguarding, duty of care, and person-centred approaches. You will explore practical methods used to empower service users, adapt care environments, and promote individual choice and independence.

  • Unit 3: Effective Communication in Health and Social Care (Mandatory Core):

Covers verbal, non-verbal, and alternative communication methods (such as Makaton, Braille, and British Sign Language). You will examine barriers to communication and practise adapting interpersonal communication techniques across one-to-one and group interactions.

  • Unit 9: Healthy Living (Mandatory Core):

Explores the biological, lifestyle, and social factors that contribute to healthy and unhealthy lifestyles. You will learn how to design health improvement strategies, set realistic wellness targets, and identify personal or structural barriers to achieving a healthy lifestyle.

(Note: In addition to these four core units, learners complete tailored optional units—such as Human Body Systems, Services in Health and Social Care, or Health Promotion—to fulfil the full 360 GLH programme requirement.)
