GCSE Biology (Gateway Science) is the fascinating study of life and the complex processes that sustain it. This course offers an engaging exploration into the natural world, ranging from the microscopic inner workings of a cell to the vast interactions within global ecosystems. Exploring the Teaching Topics
GCSE Biology 1-year course
Exam Board: OCR Gateway Biology A (Specification code: J247)
The course is structured into six teaching topics, followed by a dedicated practical skills module to ensure a comprehensive grasp of the subject:
Topic B1: Cell level systems (Structure of cells, respiration, and photosynthesis)
Topic B2: Scaling up (Supplying the cell and transport systems)
Topic B3: Organism level systems (Coordination, control, and homeostasis)
Topic B4: Community level systems (Ecosystems and the carbon/nitrogen cycles)
Topic B5: Genes, inheritance, and selection (Genetics and evolution)
Topic B6: Global challenges (Monitoring and maintaining the environment, and feeding the human population)
Topic B7: Practical skills (Integrated throughout the course)
Assessment
Your Path to Success
Your learning will be supported through regular practical work, end-of-topic tests, and mock examinations to monitor your progress. Practical skills are developed throughout and are assessed within the final written exams.
The final GCSE grade is determined by two external papers at the end of the course. Both papers assess knowledge from all six topics and include questions on practical methodology and data analysis.
Paper 1 (Foundation or Higher):
Assesses Topics B1–B3 and B7.
1 hour 45 minutes (90 marks).
Consists of multiple-choice questions and structured short/long answer questions.
Paper 2 (Foundation or Higher):
Assesses Topics B4–B6 and B7 (with assumed knowledge of B1–B3).
1 hour 45 minutes (90 marks).

Department Staff
Our dedicated team of experienced Biology teachers, such as Miss Roquain, use a variety of methods to ensure deep and engaging learning. Lessons include formal teaching, questions, discussions, and activities on topics of particular interest.
Workshops in the Biology labs provide opportunities for individual study and direct consultation with staff. We offer a variety of study aids during these sessions to help improve understanding and exam performance, with a particular emphasis on developing synoptic understanding.
